Spiritual Moral Social and Cultural Development (SMSC)

SMSC Curriculum Statement

At Willow Primary School, we provide a broad and balanced curriculum designed to meet the diverse needs of all children. Our aim is to help them reach their full potential, make progress in their learning journey, and grow into well-rounded citizens.

Central to our ethos is the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) development of our pupils. We emphasise the importance of building children's general knowledge and understanding of the world, believing that they deserve a curriculum that extends beyond the National Curriculum. Life is a rich journey, and we prioritise essential experiences throughout their time with us.

Our curriculum drivers guide the personalised learning we offer, ensuring it aligns with the needs of our children, community, and context.

SMSC Statement of Intent

Our goal is to provide an accessible curriculum that maximizes outcomes for all pupils, enabling them to know, remember, and understand more. Through personal, social, health, and economic education, we guide children to become healthy, independent, and responsible members of society. This education addresses personal and social development while tackling moral, social, and cultural issues relevant to growing up.

We promote fundamental British Values, supporting children in becoming responsible members of society and preparing them for life and work in modern Britain. We offer opportunities for pupils to learn about their rights and responsibilities and appreciate diversity. Our approach encourages children to build self-worth by positively contributing to school life and the wider community.

SMSC Curriculum Overview

Our SMSC curriculum aims to equip our children with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in the wider curriculum and to prepare them as global citizens. We promote a caring and fair environment where all pupils are valued, fostering the values of Friendship, Kindness, Perseverance, Respect, Responsibility, and Creativity, while emphasising hard work and self-discipline.

The school’s ASPIRE values contribute to the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development of our children, encouraging personal responsibility for their learning. The curriculum is supported by quality texts and includes a Pupil Leadership team elected from each class, allowing students to engage in decision-making.

Our curriculum meets the requirements of Relationships Education (RE), Relationship and Sex Education (RSE), and Health Education (HE) by promoting spiritual, moral, cultural, mental, and physical development, preparing pupils for future opportunities and responsibilities. Personal, Social, and Health Education, along with Religious Education, offers supportive avenues for spiritual and moral growth, explored further in regular assemblies.
