_________________________________________________________________________________

Every day we have a phonics session using Read write Inc. Please help your child to identify sounds in words and read their books as well as writing simple sentences where they write the sounds they hear in words.

In Autumn 2 we are continuing our learning on our 'Transport' topic.

Already, we have thought about what we know about transport and what we wanted to find out about during the term before we started our learning.

We have finished our artwork, looking at how we drew a train before we moved on to looking at the train painted by Kandinsky in his artwork 'Murnau, Castle and Train'. Our final artwork piece was our own re-creation of this artwork.  We will now focus on D&T, where our outcome will be our own box model vehicle, which we are then going to evaluate.

Our geography work has been about the continents and oceans, starting with recognising the difference between land and water and how we travel in the different places. We are naming the different continents, recognising them on a map and identifying them on our own map, then extending to naming the oceans in the same ways as the continents. We are using key words like 'land', 'sea', 'ocean', 'coast'

In Autumn 2 we are looking at the history of vehicles, ordering vehicles from oldest to newest, and discussing what has stayed the same and what has changed. From this we will look at some historical figures relating to transport.

Our science work this term is about 'materials' - recognising the different materials objects are made from and how they feel.

We have 4 maths sessions this week as we started by looking at our addition and subtraction questions to check children's understanding of the last unit. This will help us to recognise any gaps in understanding that we can continue to address.

English

In English we are looking at the story 'Man on the Moon (A Day in the Life of Bob)'. You can find this story online to share with your child.

We are answering questions about the story before ordering events using pictures, and key words and captions. We have thought about how we can add 'time' words to the start of the sentences to make our sentences more interesting and help to show the ordering of events in the day.

Our writing in Week 3 was the retelling of the story and in Week 4 we are planning and then writing our own story - 'Another Day in the Life of Bob'. In this story Bob will finally get to see an alien!

In Week 5 we will self-assess our writing before we write it up neatly. This will be copied to share with our family at home.

________________________________________________________________________________

We have three White Rose Maths activities and sheets this week as we will also be looking at how we read and answer mixed addition and subtraction questions to check that we are reading the questions carefully and know what to do when we see each symbol.

For example

4 + 3 =

5 + 4 =

9 - 3 =

10 - 9 =

6 + 1 =

7 - 7 =

'Friendship and Respect' Week

In our 'Friendship and Respect' week we are thinking about how we feel when we are kind and share.

We will think about how we stay safe on the road when we are walking and on our bikes or scooters, recognising the importance of listening and the clothes that we wear.

On Friday, we will be celebrating our differences as we wear our odd socks, and share with others what makes us special.

________________________________________________________________________________

English

This week we will continue to practise our letter formation.

Our English writing activity is all about our own bus journey. This can be linking to a journey children have been on or using their imagination to create one.

This is going to be an independent piece of writing so children can show us what they can apply from last half term's learning and we can identify what we need to work on next for each child.

Below is the planning form - children will draw pictures in the boxes and write some key words (not sentences) in the small boxes. This will then help them when they come to write their story on Friday.

Science

This week's Science (Thursday) is an investigation to see what children can remember. We will share pictures and words and see if we can remember them later. We will talk about how we remember different things and what can help us to remember.

Design and Technology

We will be looking at a range of toy vehicles to see what they are made from, how they move and what is special about them before we design our own toy vehicle. We will be making our 'box model' vehicles later in the term.

____________________________________________________________________________
Only two activities this week due to Halloween activity day on Thursday and writing up our English descriptions.

English

Our first book for our Transport topic is 'The Hundred Decker Bus'

To start our writing we are going to label a picture of a bus and then write sentences about a bus using our labels. We will be focusing on sounding out our words using our phonics knowledge and using a capital letter to start sentences, finger spaces with a sentence and a full stop to end the sentence.

'The bus is red. It has 4 wheels.'

In Week 3 (starting 21.9.20) we will be starting to look more closely at some of the decks in the story and writing about these.

Look out for some pictures of the pages we will be looking at in class.

In Week 5 (starting 5.10.20) we will be starting to design our own decks, drawing pictures and adding labels before we then start to describe our own deck in detail.

In Week 6 (starting 12.10.20) children will use their ideas in the drawing and labels to write sentences to describe the deck. The sentences will give them the chance to show their sentence formation skills, remembering a capital letter to start each sentence, finger spaces between each word and a full stop to finish each sentence. Throughout what they write they will use their phonics skills to hear and write the sounds that make up each word. The sentences will be shared with friends in their class.

History

For our 'Black History Month' focus we are looking at the lives of two great figures who have links to transport and have helped others through what they have done.

We have started by looking at the life of Lewis Hamilton, Formula One racing driver and six times world champion who has grown up with the support of his family to achieve great things.

Now we are looking at Rosa Parks, believed by many to be the 'mother of the civil rights movement'. She stood up for herself and through this led to changes for everyone. She then continued to help others.

________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________
We have then consolidated our learning on place value and the understanding of numbers to 10.

Summer 2, Week 1 timetable

We have uploaded the timetable of activities we will be following in school for if you are working with your child at home or if your child is in school some days but not others and you want to know what activities to access.

We hope this helps.

The other activities that are on the 'suggested activities' sheet from 1st June are there for if you want something more, these are what we would have done if we were in school under normal conditions.

Remember you can choose from the activities on BBC Bitesize and The Oak Academy resources, you don't have to do them all at once but they are useful for ideas and resources.
Summer 2

Week commencing Monday 25th May

There is no White Rose Maths unit this week, as it would have been half term. We have uploaded a new 'Maths Morning Activity sheet' if you want to still keep going and it is a great time to have a go at some of the activities on the 'Sunflower Project'. Take care

Friday's activity is always a set of challenges so you just need to use the link to get to the challenge video.

Online websites we have access to:

Mathletics - all children have the login details for this site. They will have various activities set linked to their Mathematical learning.

login.mathletics.co.uk

Purple Mash - all children have the login details for this site. We will set some activities on here for children to complete but they can also access other areas of the site. This site supports computing skills as well as giving activities to support other areas of learning.

www.purplemash.com

Times Table Rock Stars - login details have been sent out at the end of March for this site. Please enter the school name (Willow Primary School) and ensure the correct postcode is shown to access the right area (DN4 7EZ). You will then be able to input the login details. We have set this up to reinforce children's counting in 2s, 5s and 10s at various intervals (changing over the weeks) so have a go and see how it goes. Please do not worry if your child finds this difficult initially.

www.ttrockstars.com

Numbots - this is the same login details as TTRS (see above). There is not assigning on this site so it starts simple with counting and gets increasingly more difficult as children complete the activities.

www.numbots.com

White Rose Maths is the Maths scheme that we use. They are offering daily videos and linked activities. Weeks 1 and 2 were the last weeks that we did in school, so would be great to reinforce measure. The new learning activities they have for Summer Term are what we would be learning if we were in school now - remember you don't have to print the activity sheets, children could just write the answers on paper.

Read Write Inc Support

You can access the lessons on YouTube by searching Read Write Inc Set (1, 2 or 3) speed sounds etc and finding the video for the day.

Phonics support

Update - Phonicsplay have released a password for all parents to use at this time, making their website accessible to all.

If you are unsure on which phase to load look at the words in your child's reading book and try to match to these. It will not hurt to play some easier games but do not keep trying games that are too difficult as we do not want children to be put off. Thank you
