Year 4

Welcome to Kestrels and Owls

In Owls, we all work hard with Miss Hall, Mrs Tolley and Miss Wakefield. In our class, we love to demonstrate our Learning Superpowers every day! We also show our ASPIRE values in everything we do. On this class page, we will share and celebrate our learning.

Mountains and Earthquakes

In the Spring term, we learn about maps, mountains and earthquakes in our Geography-focused topic.

Our first lesson, linked to our Heritage and Community topic, involved us thinking about places which are important to us and our family. We enjoyed discussing what scale means on maps and looked at maps on different scales, from our local area, Doncaster, North of England, the UK and the world.

Design and Technology - Earthquake proof buildings

Our design brief was to design and make an earthquake proof building. It had to be freestanding, at least 30cm tall and be able to withstand 10 seconds of shaking. We began by researching buildings that were designed to withstand earthquakes and the properties of these buildings. After designing our building, we then selected our own materials and then used different tools to cut and join them together to make our earthquake proof structures. We used our captain collaboration skills to work together in small groups. All of our structures were still standing after the shake test!

Art and Design

We are learning about two world famous artists. The first is the local Yorkshire artist, David Hockney and the second is a Japanese artist called Hokusai. David Hockney is famous for his Pop Art and Hokusai for his printed images of Mount Fuji. The children have really enjoyed looking at lots of art work, comparing their styles and using it as inspiration for their own art work.

The children have designed and created their own printing tile to produce some wonderful mountain prints.

Maths - Times Tables

We need to know all of our times tables by the end of year and we work really hard to learn them in different ways.

- Weekly times tables tests
Check reading records to find out which times tables you are learning this week.

Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS)
The more times you go on TTRS, the more chance you have of going into the prize draw.
Practice your studio games and see if you can get in the Times Tables Rock Stars Hall of Fame as a Rock Star, Rock Legend or Rock Hero!

Using Manipulatives in Maths

We regularly use manipulatives to help our understanding in maths.
You can also access this website to use some of the manipulative tools at Toy Theatre Maths Manipulatives

Design Technology - Staying safe week

Cooking and nutrition is a key part of the Design Technology curriculum and as part of staying safe week, Owls learnt how to keep their bodies safe through healthy eating. They were tasked with designing a healthy packed lunch, which was full of energy and seasonal produce, for a mountaineer who was going to climb Scafell Pike in June.

They used their incredible investigator skills to research suitable foods and then planned their packed lunches. After learning some new food preparation skills, they cut, chopped and sliced their foods to make a delicious, healthy wrap.

Music

We are very lucky to have wider opportunities music lessons where we are learning to play the Ukulele.

World Book Day

We love reading! We had lots of fun dressing up as our favourite characters. We also enjoy working with Phil Sheppard (an author and illustrator) who did a draw along with us.

Anglo Saxons and Vikings

In the Autumn Term, we learn all about the Anglo Saxons and Vikings through our History and Geography work and we link it with our English Writing and Guided Reading work. Our first English text is "Bonebreaker" by Peter J Murray and we are writing our own diary entry from some of the events in the story as well as some descriptive character work. We will also be reading 'Attack of the Vikings' and 'There's a Viking in my bed'.

Author Visit - Peter J Murray

We are all really excited for our upcoming visit by Peter J Murray, author of our class text, Bonebreaker. He will be doing a workshop for us in November, all about writing and then he will come back the next day to sign copies of his books.

He is the audience for our written work and we can't wait to show him our diary entries and character descriptions inspired by Bonebreaker.

English

We have been working hard to produce some wonderful diary entries from the point of view of one of the characters in BoneBreaker.

Science

Our topic in Science is 'Sound'. We have been using our 'Incredible Investigator' skills to find out how sounds are made and how the ear works so we can hear.

Religious Education

In RE lessons, we have been learning about why believers from all religions see life as a journey. We have been investigating different religious ceremonies that take place in Christianity and Judaism.

Physical Education

In PE lessons, we are learning how to play Basketball.

Road safety

We went out into the community with Sara, the Pedestrian safety instructor from Doncaster Council. She showed us how to navigate roads and be safe when walking on our local streets.
